BS @ PS: A Photo Book Show at Portrait Society
Exhibition Dates: March/April 2012 at Portrait Society, 207 E. Buffalo Street, Milwaukee, WI
Submission Deadline: January 31, 2012
Entry Fee: $30
Project description: BS @ PS: A photo Book Project is an open call for Wisconsin photo-based artists to submit independently published books. All entries will be included in the exhibition, with selected projects in each category receiving cash prizes and a larger display space. All three of Portrait Society’s galleries will be used for this project. The exhibition will provide a survey of the contemporary photography community in Wisconsin. (Entrants who do not live in the state but have significant Wisconsin roots will be accepted).
Now is the time to decide what kind of a book you’ve been longing to make and pull some of those photo files together thematically so your project can be part of this major exhibition. Amateurs and professionals alike are encouraged to participate. The entry fee is $30.
All books must be created during 2011/2012 and should be photo based and self published through sites such as Lulu or Blurb. No size requirements.
Workshops will be held in upcoming months to discuss the project and offer instructions regarding the editing and creation of on-line books. The first workshop will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 14, led by Milwaukee photographer Paul Matzner who recently self-published, “New York City Moments.”
After all submissions are received, a group of judges will select finalists for cash prizes and special presentations of their work. All of the books, however, will be included in the exhibition at Portrait Society and will be for sale.
Categories for entries include The Contemporary Portrait, Documentary, Travel, Fine Art and Found/Vintage/Compilation. More information about these categories as well as detailed entry specifications is available on the project blog (add link here).
This project is being coordinated by Erik Ljung and Portrait Society Gallery. Please call 414-870-9930 for additional information. Portrait Society Gallery is located at 207 E. Buffalo Street, in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward, fifth floor, Marshall Building. portraitsocietygallery@gmail.com/Portraitsocietygallery.wordpress.com.
Entrants are strongly encouraged to think openly and broadly about what might constitute a photo book and take creative risks with design and concept.

The entry fee is for how many submissions?
Frank, good question. I think we will allow up to 2 submissions per $30 entry fee. You can submit as many books as you would like though, as long as you pay the additional fees.
Thanks for the question.
of the books to be displayed and for sale during the show, what amount will the authors receive for sales? and, can multiple copies of the same book be available for sale during the show?
The books will be for sale during the show. Considering the costs of self publishing, we will be selling the books along with an actual photographic print. The gallery will take 50% of the sale of the book / print. Let me know if you have any other questions!
So “considering the costs of self publishing” the gallery will take 50%??? Quite steep considering galleries average 25-40% in Milwaukee. Also, as an accomplished publisher/author of a photo book please avoid Blurb. I can elaborate, but it’s fairly easy to google “Blurb sucks” and read for oneself.
Hi, the standard gallery commission is 50 percent, in Milwaukee and everywhere else. The photo books will not make a profit but will reach a broader audience and hoping add up to something quite interesting.
Your description says the books should be “self published through sites such as Lulu or Blurb.” Does that mean that hand-made books are not admissible? Do all books have to be created online?
Eddee,
We are only suggested those websites. Hand-made photo books are admissible, however, books will be on display and for sale so please make sure that they can be replicated. Also, the photo books need to maintain photo book quality in printing and paper. We are not accepting ‘zine photobooks.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks,
Erik
This is so exciting!
Will there be an opening reception?
There will be an opening reception. The dates have not been solidified, but we plan on having it in the spring.
